The music co-op was formed by Lancaster University students back in 1985
An old warehouse used by Lancaster Music Co-op next to the city’s historic grade II-listed Grand Theatre is set for a new roof and other improvements, which will also improve the whole area, under a planning application.
In September this year, a lease was signed between the music co-op and city council, which owns the warehouse, giving the music group stability for the future. There are also longer-term hopes to regenerate other areas of the eastern city centre with Lancaster Canal Quarter ambitions. The application is being overseen by Holly Blackwell of the Lancaster Music Co-op and an agent, Sam Edge of Rocket Architects in Overton. Rocket has produced a design, access and heritage statement which is among the planning information.
A report for councillors states: “The application site relates to a former warehouse building which abuts the fly tower to the rear of the Grand Theatre, which is a grade II-listed building dating from 1782. The date of the warehouse is uncertain but it appears on an 1890s map. It is considered to be a non-designated heritage asset. It is also situated in the Lancaster Conservation Area.”
