Construction of the main structure and roof of a new school for children with special educational needs and disabilities ( SEND ) has reached completion. The £30 million project, undertaken by Nottinghamshire County Council at the former Ravensdale School site in Mansfield, will be named Horizons Academy and operated by the Diverse Academies Trust .

Slated to open by the spring term of 2026, the school will have a capacity of up to 160 pupils aged seven to 19 years old, offering a specialized learning environment for children and young people with social, emotional, and mental health needs. County council leader Sam Smith emphasized the council's commitment to meeting the needs of children and young people with SEND and their families, highlighting the importance of providing much-needed special school places in Nottinghamshire. Smith stressed the vital need to invest in future generations. This school is part of a broader initiative by the county council to create up to 490 additional SEND school places by 2026, aiming to address the growing demand for specialized school places across the county. Councillor Nigel Moxon, deputy cabinet member for education and special educational needs and disabilities, underscored the principle that every child in Nottinghamshire, regardless of background, deserves the best possible education in the most suitable setting. Nottinghamshire County Councillors and partners gathered at the site to commemorate the completion of the building's main structure and roof. The £30 million cost encompasses not only the construction but also additional expenses such as furniture and equipment. David Cotton, Diverse Academies Trust chief executive officer, expressed delight at attending the structure signing ceremony for Horizons Academy, calling it a unique opportunity to leave a lasting mark within the building for future generations. Cotton also commended the progress of the building works, stating that Horizons is on track to deliver an exceptional learning environment for young people in the local community with special educational needs.
