Health minister Karin Smyth addresses the NHS workforce shortage and the new plans to tackle waiting lists for elective care.
Health minister Karin Smyth admitted that workforce is a 'problem' in the NHS but said the plans to cut waiting times for pre-planned care will help staff work more 'efficiently'. She said the waiting lists for pre-planned care, also known as elective care , were 'shocking' and that the new plans would 'make sure that there is capacity in the system to really take on these waiting lists and get people back onto living with their lives'.
Asked about staff, she told Times Radio: 'Well, we know that workforce is a problem in the system, but we also know that people are working in really dreadful conditions. 'Lord Darzi mentioned this in his report, that people are working so inefficiently in some places, making workarounds, that they are not getting through the waiting list as they would like to. And we know that's really frustrating for staff. 'So, we know that some of these locations will actually be attractive for staff to work in because of where they are, the sorts of work they're doing, because it's routine work, particularly focused on electives, rather than being in hospital, which obviously deals with a whole range of emergency and planned care.' She suggested the new locations would also offer staff more flexibility
