Nottingham City Council's sudden closure of the Howitt Building, now known as the Lenton Business Centre, has left community groups and businesses reeling. The council cited 'issues relating to fire doors' based on a fire risk assessment, giving tenants just 28 days to vacate the site. Businesses and community members, including the historically significant Marcus Garvey Day Centre serving the Windrush generation, are demanding transparency on the fire inspection findings and a meeting with council leaders to discuss the impact of the closure.

Despite repeated calls for the fire risk report to be released, Nottingham City Council has denied access to community groups and businesses devastated by the decision to suddenly close a Nottingham business centre. Organisations at the Howitt Building in Lenton Boulevard, now known as the Lenton Business Centre, have been served notice without warning by Nottingham City Council.

While the centre mainly acts as a business hub, the Marcus Garvey Centre is also historically connected with the Afro-Caribbean community, providing a day centre service for the Windrush generation. This provision cannot be found elsewhere in the city. "The short time frame makes it impossible for businesses to relocate without catastrophic financial and operational consequences. Many of us have invested significant resources into our operations here, supporting the local economy and employing numerous local residents. We have operated in the business centre for many years and even decades."
