Nottingham's tram network faced a series of setbacks in 2024, including road traffic collisions, fires, and incidents involving cyclists. Despite these challenges, the network maintained a high punctuality rate and successfully operated an enhanced timetable during Goose Fair.
Nottingham's tram network faced several challenges in 2024, according to a report by Nottingham Express Transit (NET) covering the period from May to November. While the service maintained a high punctuality rate, ranging from 93.6% to 95.8% with August being the best performing month since 2016, significant road traffic collisions disrupted operations.
On June 4th, a collision between a motorcycle and a car at Sheriff's Way Junction caused major disruptions, leading to road closures for several hours. September proved to be particularly challenging due to various third-party incidents, including a crash on Gregory Boulevard on the 12th and an incident involving a scaffolding truck pulling out in front of a tram at the Beaconsfield Street junction, injuring a tram driver. The report highlights that despite the driver applying the emergency brake, the collision derailed the tram, requiring several days for repairs. Two fires also occurred during the month, disrupting services. The first was a lorry fire on the A453 on the 20th, followed by a blaze at the Pizza Punks restaurant in the Lace Market a week later. On October 16th, a car disregarding a red light at the David Lane junction collided with a tram. Furthermore, NET reported an increase in incidents involving cyclists taking risks around the tramway during the summer, leading to additional briefings for tram drivers to enhance vigilance. Despite these challenges, NET successfully operated an enhanced timetable with more services during Goose Fair, ensuring a safe, reliable, and frequent service for customers.Trevor Stocker, head of operations at NET, emphasized the significant work undertaken behind the scenes to repair damage following road traffic collisions involving trams. This can sometimes result in a reduced number of available trams in the fleet while repairs are in progress. He acknowledged the impact of both tram-related and non-tram-related road traffic collisions on the network, including incidents involving other road users and cyclists. While these incidents may not directly damage the trams, they can still disrupt services and affect customer experiences in terms of journey smoothness and wait times across the network
