Nottingham's tram network experienced a range of issues in 2024, including road traffic collisions, fires, and incidents involving cyclists taking risks. Despite these challenges, the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) maintained a high level of punctuality.

Nottingham's tram network faced a number of challenges in 2024, including crashes, fires, and incidents involving risk-taking cyclists. Despite these setbacks, the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) system maintained a high level of punctuality, with performance between 93.6% and 95.8% over the seven-month period from May to November. This included the best August performance since 2016. However, significant road traffic collisions impacted tram availability.

On June 4th, a serious crash between a motorcycle and a car at Sheriff's Way Junction caused major disruption, leading to road closures for several hours. September proved to be a particularly challenging month due to various third-party incidents. A crash on Gregory Boulevard on the 12th caused delays, followed by an incident a week later where a scaffolding truck pulled out in front of a tram at the Beaconsfield Street junction. This resulted in injuries to the tram driver and the derailment of the tram. It took several days to repair the tram following the collision. Additionally, two fires during September caused disruption. The first involved a lorry fire on the A453, followed by a blaze at the Pizza Punks restaurant in the Lace Market. On October 16th, a car failed to stop at a red light at the David Lane junction, colliding with a tram. The operator also reported an increase in incidents involving cyclists taking risks around the tramway during the summer months. To address this, NET provided additional briefings to tram drivers, reminding them to be vigilant. Despite the potential for strike action ahead of Goose Fair, NET successfully operated an enhanced timetable with more services, ensuring a safe, reliable, and frequent service for passengers.Trevor Stocker, head of operations at NET, commented on the challenges faced by the network: 'At times where one of our trams is involved in a road traffic collision, there is considerable work that goes on behind the scenes to repair damage and reduce the knock-on impact for our customers. As a result, this can sometimes lead to a reduced number of available trams in our fleet while the works are taking place. Over the past year, a number of both tram-related and non-tram-related road traffic collisions have affected the network, with the latter including incidents regarding other road users and cyclists. Despite no direct damage to our trams in these instances, this can still impact our customers, both in terms of our ability to ensure a smooth journey, as well as wait times across the network.
