A reminder for Nottinghamshire residents to dispose of Christmas waste responsibly, especially focusing on what can and cannot be recycled.

With people having parties, hosting big Christmas dinners and treating each other to gifts over the festive season, there can be a significant amount of additional waste created by households across Nottinghamshire each year. While we all remember to check when the bin collection times have changed to, not everyone spends as much time thinking about what can and can't go in the recycling bin.

Things like plastic food trays, mince pie foil wrappers, vegetable punnets and tinsel are just a few of the items that can't be popped in your recycling bin, but each year workers at the Veolia distribution centre spend hours picking these out. Other things that cannot be recycled include Christmas crackers, plastic and metal biscuit tubs and plastic bags. Many people also try to recycle their wrapping paper and cards, but if any of these have glitter or foil, then they cannot be recycled either. Food waste, batteries, CDs, DVDs and fairy lights also end up in the recycling bin, but these can't be recycled either. Although fairy lights can be taken to your nearest recycling centre that accepts electrical appliances. However, you don't need to worry about your regular waste bin being filled to the brim as there are still plenty of things that can and should be recycled. TV guides, tin cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard sweet tubes are all things that can be recycled. Plus, most gift sets or deliveries come in cardboard boxes and all of these can be recycled too, as can any plain Christmas cards and even squirty cream bottles. When it comes to wrapping paper, a good way to see if it can be recycled is by using the scrunch test. If you scrunch up the paper into a ball and it stays that way, it can be recycled, but if it opens up it will need to go in the bin. If you are unsure about what can go in the recycling, Nottinghamshire County Council recommends that you use their Recycling Checker, which can tell you what to do with almost any item
