The plans would see several Nottinghamshire councils being completely scrapped
The future of local government in Nottinghamshire is "up in the air" amid a potential return to the idea of the county being served by a 'super council'. The notion of a Nottinghamshire super council was a hotly debated topic for years before the coronavirus pandemic saw attention move away from the controversial plans.
Sam Smith, Nottinghamshire County Council's new leader, said: "The government are looking at local government reorganisation, so there's a lot up in the air. We need to see how that all lands over the coming days and weeks to decide what we're going to do here, so nothing's decided yet. Asked if plans could include the return of the Nottinghamshire super council idea, Councillor Smith said: "It could be, but we need to go and see what the ministers say, don't we? It's Labour government policy.
Nottinghamshire's district and borough council leaders were vocally opposed to the plans, whilst other parties at County Hall described the idea as a "vanity project". Ben Bradley eventually confirmed he would not be bringing forward any plans when he took over from Ms Cutts in 2021. At the time of Ms Cutts' plans for a Nottinghamshire super council covering all areas outside of the city, Nottingham City Council itself put forward a counter-proposal. The city said it wanted to expand its area of coverage to include Gedling, Broxtowe and Rushcliffe - leaving the county council with all other areas.
