Superfoods are a staple in many diets and are often touted for their health benefits, but certain foods can actually help heal a number of ailments, according to a nutritionist

Superfoods are famed for their healing and boosting properties, but not all superfoods are created equal. Nutritionists have detailed the surprising ingredients that heal the most ailments - including chocolate. When we think of superfoods, we often picture vibrant green veggies or smoothies.

Salmon Salmon, rich in Omega-3, is frequently hailed as a powerhouse food for weight loss, muscle gain and brain health. But it also boasts healing properties, with the expert recommending it for those battling anxiety, insomnia, menopause and migraines. "These nutrients are beneficial for our mental health as they play a role in regulating neurotransmitters that activate dopamine and serotonin, resulting in calming and relaxing effects." Anxiety can also reportedly be reduced by nibbling on foods containing tryptophan such as eggs or dark chocolate, while high-calcium nosh like milk, yoghurt and cheese could be the ticket to calming menopause symptoms.

He advises: "While the foods mentioned have been known to help improve our sleep quality we would still recommend to make sure you're leaving yourself enough time between eating and sleeping. A good rule of thumb to go by is eating 4-6 hours before bedtime to avoid any disruptions and a peaceful night."
