'You need people to fall in love with the place or it doesn't work'
An idyllic village pub - one of the oldest in Nottinghamshire - is back in action after a takeover. With its cosy log fires and generously proportioned garden, the historic Unicorn's Head in Langar is a pub for all seasons.
Andy Hunt, who runs the White Horse in Ruddington, and chef Leroy Allen are the new custodians of the Everards' pub on Main Street. Leroy, who has previously worked at The Wollaton, has put together a menu that embraces the region's artisan produce, mostly from within a ten-mile radius. "We're using locally sourced steaks from Harker's farm shop, they are absolutely amazing. The chicken they use from Lincolnshire is so moist and tasty - it tastes how chicken should taste. Proper chicken. They supply quality. At the end of the day that's what people come back for." Even the condiments are local, from Nottingham company Mr Pitchfork's Pickles.
It was renamed the Unicorn's Head in 1825 when John Wright, a wealthy banker from London, became Lord of the Manor and was able to use his newly granted coat of arms featuring a unicorn's head. It became a coaching inn in the 19th century with stables and at one time had its own brewhouse, identified by the unusual three-tier chimney.
"We did more breakfasts than we were anticipating and just under 100 for Sunday lunch and we hadn't advertised it, there was no booking link available so it was just local people. This weekend has been fantastic and it's been what we wanted, a mix, not just one side. The bar's been busy, the restaurant's been busy.
