Machado, playing third base Tuesday for third straight game, is off to his slowest start in a decade while working back from elbow surgery
Manny Machado has to spend a lot of time on a trainer’s table to be able to spend a lot of time on the baseball field. That was the case last season. It is again this season. “There’s good days, bad days,” he said Tuesday afternoon. “It's just a grind I'm going to be dealing with all year. … It feels good to be back on the field. I'm excited about that. I’ve been playing some defense. That's been exciting go out there and get some dirt on my cleats.
It is the lowest batting average of his career 39 games into a season and the second-lowest OPS . He is also hitting the ball on the ground significantly more often and hitting the ball hard slightly less often than in any season since '14. He said there are some facets of his swing that are off. He has said he believes that will resolve as he builds strength endurance and has expressed confidence he will be close to 100 percent by midsummer. “It's getting better,” he said of his swing.
