The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released new rules for parents on Universal Credit, requiring them to increasingly meet work-related requirements as their youngest child ages. While parents with children under one are exempt from work search, those with older children will be expected to dedicate increasing amounts of time to job hunting or work preparation activities.

Parents who rely on Universal Credit are forced to return to work when their children reach the age of three. And as their children get older, they are required to more hours.

It says: 'If you make a Universal Credit claim and have children you will need to nominate a main carer. If you're a single parent or the main carer, your responsibilities will change as your youngest child gets older and will be tailored to your personal circumstances.' Youngest child is age two: You will be placed in the ‘work preparation’ group. You will not be expected to look for work. The work-related activities you will be expected to do are having regular appointments with Universal Credit and work preparation activities, such as writing your CV.

'You will get help from a work coach' Guidance on GOV.UK explains: 'If you need to look for work, you will get help from a work coach. Your work coach can help with things like writing a CV, accessing training and looking for work in your area. They will focus on mentoring and coaching you, to help you meet the requirements recorded in your claimant commitment.
