Albanese said the decision to waive the requirement for a former detainee – now accused of a violent assault – to wear an ankle bracelet was the wrong one.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has conceded the Community Protection Board failed when it allowed an electronic ankle monitor to be removed from the former detainee now accused of brutally assaulting a Perth grandmother, clearing the ground for federal intervention on managing released non-citizens.

“I think that lacks common sense and that is one of the things, no doubt that will be on the agenda today at the meeting of attorneys-general,” he said. Three of the non-departmental members of the board have refused to speak to this masthead: former Victoria Police commissioner Graham Ashton, former Queensland Police deputy commissioner Peter Martin, and youth advocate Carmel Guerra.Asked if the decision to remove the ankle bracelet was a failure, Albanese agreed.Advertisementat a February federal court hearing over his curfew breaches, the prosecutor raised concerns that Doukoshkan could commit further offences, but did not oppose bail.

“Notwithstanding that, your honour, we do not oppose bail with a personal undertaking being imposed, but want to make it very well known to the accused … further breaches may not have the same response in terms of attitude towards bail.”the Community Protection Board gave the advice that led to Doukoshkan’s electronic monitoring condition being removed in March.
