From January to November 2021, the country saw the highest mortality in 63 years, with COVID-19 as the second highest cause of death, the Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) said on Tuesday, Feb. 1. | via onenewsph

In a report, PopCom said the first 11 months of 2021 posted the most number of fatalities at 768,504. This is higher by 154,562 deaths registered in 2020. The figure showed a 25 percent increase in mortality, “with still a month-and-a-half worth of data to be reckoned for 2021.”Perez said that COVID was the second “underlying” cause of deaths for 75,285 Filipinos.The leading killer of Filipinos was ischemic heart disease at 110,332 deaths from January to October 2021.Mortalities were also up for cerebrovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus from 2020 to 2021.

Perez said that overall, there was an increased mortality in five of 10 leading causes of deaths last year.
