Police and emergency services rushed to the scene on Langrick Road at around 1.20pm on Saturday. The Spitfire, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, was flying near the air station when it crashed. Road closures have been enforced on Dogdyke Road and Sandy Bank, while motorists are being urged to avoid the area altogether. Lincolnshire Police previously said that it believes only a "single-occupant aircraft and nobody else is thought to have been involved".An MoD spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we must confirm the death of an RAF pilot in a tragic accident near RAF Coningsby today.
An investigation will take place. RAF Coningsby is known for being home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, a collection of wartime fighter and bomber aircraft that take part in air shows as well as memorial displays. The aircraft which take place in the scheme, which include six Spitfire, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota, and two Chipmunks, are primarily used for training and are flown by regular RAF crew.
