Cleveland ranks 57th overall in the survey.

Hazy skies are shown over downtown Houston in June 2020. The city ranks as the dirtiest in the U.S., according to a survey.has Dayton at No. 42 and Cincinnati at No. 50 overall. Cleveland ranks 57th overall, but is the worst in Ohio for litter involving cigarette butts, the report says. Columbus is one of the cleanest cities in the U.S., ranking 137th.

The study compared more than 150 U.S. cities on pollution, living conditions, infrastructure, and consumer satisfaction. Houston, Texas, was ranked the No. 1 dirtiest city, pushing last year’s dirtiest city, Newark, N.J., to the No. 2 spot. Houston has plenty of issues: It ranks third worst in greenhouse gas emissions from large industrial facilities and also has the biggest cockroach problem, the study says.

Virginia Beach, Virginia, is the cleanest large city, while Fremont, California, Des Moines, Iowa, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, all ranked high for cleanliness. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
