The Access to Work scheme, intended for disabled individuals, has seen a dramatic increase in applications, largely fueled by online influencers discussing ADHD. Spending on the program has soared, raising concerns about its rising cost.
Thousands are now taking advantage of the Access to Work scheme, a UK government program designed to provide support and equipment to disabled individuals. The scheme offers financial assistance for a range of items and services, including noise-cancelling headphones, Apple Smartwatches, and work coaches. The number of people utilizing this scheme has surged dramatically, with spending reaching £258 million in the last financial year, a 40% increase from the previous year.
This spike is largely attributed to a rise in online influencers, particularly those focusing on ADHD, who have been actively advising their followers about the benefits of Access to Work.Around a third of all applications to the scheme are now driven by individuals seeking support for mental health conditions, a significant jump from just 5% a decade ago. This trend has raised concerns within the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) regarding the rising cost of the program. While the scheme was initially intended to assist deaf and blind individuals, it has become increasingly popular among those with self-diagnosed mental health conditions. TikTokers, like Madeleine Alexander-Grout and Amanda Perry, have garnered thousands of followers by sharing their experiences with Access to Work and providing advice on how to apply. Alexander-Grout, who claims to have received thousands of pounds from the scheme to support her ADHD coaching business, emphasized the importance of recognizing hidden disabilities and neurodivergent conditions. Perry, in her video guidance, specifically encourages individuals with ADHD to explore the program, highlighting the potential for up to £62,000 in annual government support. Despite the growing number of applications, the DWP maintains that all support provided through Access to Work is rigorously vetted to ensure its appropriateness and proportionality. They acknowledge the need for reform within the benefits system and anticipate publishing proposals for health and disability benefit reform this Spring
