Rishi Sunak is currently seeking to revive plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, after approving a new legislation which gives the government the power to detain all refugees who arrive in small boats.
Yet despite her ongoing ‘obsession’ with the Rwanda scheme, no migrants have yet been sent to the African nation and the entire proposal has been mired in aSonya Sceats, Chief Executive at Freedom from Torture, said: ‘The proposals in this ill-judged bill are vindictive and dysfunctional. Rishi Sunak is dialling up the cruelty against people fleeing torture and war to distract from the scandals that continue to engulf his government.
‘This legislation will do nothing to reduce the number of deaths in the Channel or the chaos and incompetence that blights our asylum system, nor will it guarantee sanctuary for those who need it. The government is seeking to ‘permanently’ exclude refugess who arrive in small bots from life in the UK
‘Rather than scapegoating refugees, Rishi Sunak should rebuild an asylum system capable of giving refugees a fair hearing and focus on opening safe routes to protection so that they are not compelled to risk their lives in order to safety in the UK.’
