Ongoing work on two major highway expansion projects will mean headaches for San Antonio drivers over the weekend.
North Side motorists will face a double whammy this weekend with portions of Loop 1604 set to close where the highway meets both Interstate 10 and Interstate 35. The I-10 closures will only happen at night, while the I-35 closures will last all weekend. The interchange where I-10 meets Loop 1604 will close each night from Friday to Monday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. as construction crews build flyover ramps as part of the Texas Department of Transportation's $1.
TxDOT recently installed the first set of steel girders as part of I-35 NEX Central, according to the latest monthly newsletter for the project. The six girders extend from Nacogdoches Road east to Lookout Road along the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road. The girders sit above the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Once completed, the elevated portion will offer two general-purpose lanes and one high-occupancy lane in each direction.
