Criticism has been directed towards Lancashire County Council
Creating play streets for children, a lack of funding for teenage facilities and addressing girls and women’s concerns about park safety after dark have been raised by Rossendale councillors. Topics around safe places to play, meet friends or exercise were raised at the latest full meeting of Rossendale Borough Council.
In reply, Labour Coun Alyson Barnes, the Rossendale Council leader, said: “The whole valley operates with volunteer power and we’ve lived in an era when statutory [legal] provision has had to be drawn back. We do thank people for their efforts and everything they have done as volunteers. Regarding spaces for children, Labour Coun Barbara Ashworth asked about creating ‘play streets’. Coun Ashworth said: “Play streets are resident-led closures created for children and young people. This creates free spaces where children can play with friends in front of their own door step. It promotes increased exercise and well-being, and a greater sense of community. The council can promote pay streets in Rossendale and remove any blocks that may exist.
On feelings about park safety, Labour Coun Gemma Rooke said: “A recent survey by the Office for National Statistics said 82 per cent of women felt very or fairly unsafe in parks and open spaces after dark. Myself and, I’m sure, other women will agree.
