Queensland great Wally Lewis has revealed his diagnosis with a debilitating brain condition in an emotional interview with 60 Minutes.
Lewis’ partner Lynda Adams told interviewer Tom Steinfort he had been diagnosed with “probable CTE” after Lewis told of his struggles with short term memory loss, forgetting the name of the condition.
Lewis said he was given a routine test by a doctor where he was asked to repeat simple things and couldn’t remember them. “A minute later she said, ‘What are the things I asked you to remember?’ And I got two of them. And then sometime later, after that, she said, ‘Do you remember what they were?’ And I think I said ‘bus’.
The Queensland legend said it was tough to acknowledge his frailties following the diagnosis but admitted that players have to move past the “rugged” mindset they try to maintain. “It’s devastating,” Dr Mobbs said. “It’s hard to see the players go through it. They’re people I’ve admired and loved growing up, so the last thing I want to do is diagnose them with dementia.”
