Scott McTominay could hardly believe his eyes when his Seville stunner was so cruelly ruled out.

Believe it or not – there was a time when it was safe to leap off your seat in a moment of unbridled joy to celebrate a goal.

Officialdom has gone down a rabbit hole in an attempt to bring perfect clarity to on-field decisions and the fear is there’s now no way back. Moments after Scott McTominay had appeared to have rattled Scotland ahead against Spain on Thursday night, then Dutch referee Serdar Gozubuyuk demanded centre stage.

Then it’s all down to social media, the outrage and claims of cheating from a public who love nothing more than a sense of injustice and it’s harming a sport which has existed perfectly well for over 150 years with a man in the middle making judgements with his two eyes. Kenny Dalglish did the same against Spain at Hampden, instant ecstasy, no doubts, immediate celebration, now there’s an emotional delay, all eyes on the referee, a check through all of the possible infractions which could have been in play and it’s not how football was supposed to be.

Gozubuyuk had been described as the “worst referee in the world” by former Hull and Russia boss Leonid Slutsky who once said: “Maybe the problem is his attitude towards me – maybe he doesn’t like fat people or bald people. He is like a waiter. Yes, he must be around the game because he is the referee. It is the players who are the most important people here. He thinks he is the most important. Absolutely the worst referee in the world that I have seen in my life.
