Kasia Pietrzak, 43, is still trying to come to terms with her mum Krystyna's death, less than two weeks after she was diagnosed with the condition in 2022

A Scots woman has been left devastated after her mum died just two weeks after being diagnosed by cancer. Kasia Pietrzak, 43, opened up about the heartache of losing her mum, Krystyna, just two weeks after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Two years after her mum's death, Kasia is channelling her grief by taking part in Bowel Cancer UK's annual Swim15 challenge to help raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms. The challenge will see her swim 15km throughout August and raise money for the charity, in memory of her late mum. Kasia, who started cold-water swimming last year and is now part of her local outdoor swimming group, added: "Those feelings led me to the charity, and I wanted to help them continue to support people who have been affected by the disease. I chose to take part in Swim15 because swimming is my passion, and it has given me the means to process my emotions.

Bowel Cancer is the second biggest cancer killer, affecting both men and women. Symptoms include blood in your poo, a change in your pooing habits, you might be going more or less often, or have diarrhoea or constipation that might come and go, losing weight but you’re not sure why, feeling very tired all the time but you’re not sure why, or a pain or lump in your tummy.
