A new list of the top 100 beaches across the globe has been shared by travel experts, and one stunning Scottish beach that featured in Chariots of Fire is among those included.

Scotland is home to a seemingly endless list of stunning beaches that delight countless locals and tourists alike each and every year. From popular spots like Portobello Beach in Edinburgh to more secluded destinations such as Claigan Coral Beach, the country is renowned for its sandy beauty spots.

The beach, known for its golden sands and clear blue waters places behind Starfish Beach in Panama at number 46 and ahead of Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro at number 48. The scenic Scottish spot, which is around 15 minutes on foot from the centre of St Andrews, extends for around two miles and is a popular jogging spot.

The experts at BeachAtlas commented: "West Sands beach in St Andrews gained fame from Chariots of Fire, where athletes race barefoot to Vangelis' captivating soundtrack, echoing the spirit of competition and triumph. Meanwhile, the number spot on the list was awarded to Bora Bora. Elsewhere, Boulders Beach in South Africa and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii round out the top three.
