Everton got themselves into numerous promising positions against Luton Town but their execution let them down badly
We all view and assess football matches through the prism of our own wants and needs so while it was no surprise to hear Everton manager Sean Dyche paint a different picture of their 2-1 home defeat to Luton Town than Rob Edwards, should their actually be a degree of sympathy for the Blues boss in terms of his team’s repeated failures to take their chances?
From his point of view, Dyche was left bemoaning the number of chances that his Everton team squandered, saying: “Bodies in the box, balls going into the box, quality chances created. You’ve got to take them at the end of the day and their body language to take theirs was better than ours, particularly the set pieces.”
Similarly, just Manchester United on 95 had more attacking actions than Everton’s 85 and this combined to give them an expected goals figure, something that Dyche himself declared: “would be right up there” of 3.23 with just two other teams having scores of more than three, Arsenal and West Ham United with Newcastle United next best on 2.59. For what it’s worth, Aston Villa who hit Brighton & Hove Albion for six, had an xG of 2.26.
That inability to test the Luton keeper is reflected in their 11th position for shots on target, which was a mere three compared to Aston Villa and West Ham United who both had nine. When it came to successful dribbling in the final third of the pitch, Everton were the worst in the Premier League with a success rate of just 29% with the top three being Chelsea ; Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa .
