Six Northern Ohio beaches along Lake Erie under a bacteria contamination advisory for E. coli
are currently under a bacteria contamination advisory after traces of E. coli were found in the waters at the beaches.Community Park Beach Lakeshore Park
The advisories currently in place, as of Wednesday, have not been bad enough to force the closure of the beaches. Dr. Amy Edwards with University Hospitals says that, while the beaches are open, you should still be careful. “If you’re up to your knees, cooling off will you get E. coli? No, that’s not how it works,” Dr. Edwards said, “it’s the splashing around, it’s the getting it on your hands... generally we advise people who are high risk because of medical conditions or children to avoid going to the beach at this time”.
Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District conducts testing daily at 6am. According to Public Information Specialist Jessica Shutty,“If we find traces of E. coli, we continually monitor,” Shutty said, “and depending on the levels of E. coli we might be out there several times the next few days to make sure it is safe to swim and that none of our aquatic friends are in any danger whatsoever”.
