Just 1,080 out of 8,265 convictions resulted in immediate custody – meaning over 7,000 criminals got either a suspended sentence, fine or community sentence.
John Apter, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: “There must be a credible deterrent from the law, one that makes it clear that as a society we don’t tolerate attacks on the police and other emergency service workers.“But if the full force of the law is not brought to bear on these sorts of incidents, then we will lose control of a society that is based on trust and respect for the police.
