The WA Government has reached agreement with claimants acting for thousands of Aboriginal Australians across the state paid little or no wages.
Emergency warnings are in place for fires burning near Dalveen, The Glen, Silverwood, Cherry Gully ; Watsonville and Silver Valley in QLD.The WA government will pay nearly $200 million to settle a class action brought on behalf of thousands of Aboriginal Australians who had their wages withheld while subject to onerous legislation.
The action was launched by Fitzroy Crossing man Mervyn Street in 2020, with between 8,000 and 10,000 members joining the action. Subject to Federal Court approval, the government will pay up to $180.4 million to eligible Aboriginal workers, their spouses and children, as well as an additional $15.4 million in legal costs.
