Hundreds were evacuated from a city centre building in Liverpool after a suspicious package was reported. Emergency services responded, closing roads and evacuating surrounding businesses.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from a city centre building after a ' suspicious package ' was received. Union Street, just off Old Hall Street in Liverpool city centre, was cordoned off on Thursday, January 2. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 12.50pm following a report a suspicious package was received by a building.
Merseyside Police said as a precaution, Union Street was closed and a building, understood to be The Capital Building - the largest office building in Liverpool, was evacuated while emergency services dealt with the incident. A cordon was also put in place on Rumford Place and the Tesco Express which is next door to the office building was also evacuated. The incident was stood down as of 5pm on Thursday and the road closure was lifted. In an update, Merseyside Police said the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene and examined the package, which is safe. A police spokesperson added: 'We would like to thank residents, motorists and workers for their patience and understanding whilst this incident was resolved.
