Country rife with civil unrest following disputed October election, Syrah in default on US loans
Sovereign risk for African miners is again in the spotlight this week as civil unrest in Mozambique around a disputed election impacts mining projects in the small nation. Graphite specialist Syrah Resources is the latest to flag operational impacts, on Thursday declaring a force majeure event for its Balama operation as protesters impede production.
The protest actions have been peaceful, with no evident actions to deliberately damage property, plant or equipment at Balama," Syrah said. The Mozambique woes add to what's been a tough year for Syrah.
