Teachers at Kirkintilloch High School in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, are set to take industrial action due to concerns about pupil abuse and violent behaviour. The NASUWT union reports that staff feel their concerns have been dismissed by management and that pupils face minimal consequences for their actions.

Teachers at Kirkintilloch High School in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, are set to take industrial action, citing concerns about pupil abuse and violent behaviour. The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers ( NASUWT ) reports that staff have repeatedly raised their concerns but feel they have been dismissed by management, even being told their lessons weren't engaging enough.

Beginning on February 5th, teachers will refuse to cover classes for absent colleagues, and will not participate in extracurricular trips or activities. While this action will not involve a full strike, it signifies a serious escalation of the dispute.NASUWT representatives claim that pupils face minimal consequences for their actions, with restorative approaches being overused. Mike Corbett, a Scotland national official for the union, stated: 'Members feel blamed and gaslit by management for the poor behaviour of pupils.' He added, 'A culture where there are no consequences for poor behaviour is not setting up pupils well for adult life and fails the employers' duty of care towards its staff.'Rod McCready, the NASUWT national executive member for East Dunbartonshire, echoed these sentiments, saying, 'In a school where there is a culture of abuse and violence from pupils, our members are not willing at the present time to put themselves at further risk by taking such classes.' The East Dunbartonshire Council, the local authority responsible for the school, has acknowledged the impending action. Ann Davie, the council's chief executive, stated, 'We have fully engaged with the school management regarding NASUWT staff concerns and we are currently in discussions with the union to try to resolve the issues they have brought forward.' Teachers are hoping that these discussions will lead to a resolution that addresses their concerns and ensures a safe and effective learning environment for all.
