Martial sees his Manchester United contract expire next season and the club must decide whether he has a role to play under Erik ten Hag
Manchester United have a number of contract decisions to make within the next nine months. The likes of Hannibal Mejbri, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof see their deals expire next summer and could leave the club for nothing if no action is taken.
However, fans have been left mightily frustrated by the striker. Upon his arrival in 2015, Gary Neville said Martial may start ‘95 per cent’ of matches given the reduced number of striker options at the club at the time. Since then, United have not been blessed with a plethora of attacking talent to support Martial.
There is an argument to suggest that United should have been asking for a lower fee but Erik ten Hag was clearly fine with him being a part of this season’s squad. Whether he likes playing second fiddle to Rasmus Hojlund is something that will be discovered in due course. The question that needs answering is how he fits into Ten Hag’s long-term plans. In reality, being a back-up to Hojlund is the best role that can be offered to him. Not only does it reduce injury risk but it seems to have made him hungrier from viewing his appearances from the bench.
