Not every footballer leaves Manchester United after telling Sir Alex Ferguson to shove a football up his a***. But then again, not every footballer is Terry Gibson. By the time he found himself moving from United to the infamous Crazy Gang of Wimbledon, Gibson had already earned his reputation. A straight-talking team player who loves a bit of a laugh off the pitch - he and Wimbledon were meant to be.

We had a big row, a big bust up,” he recalled, speaking on the Undr the Cosh podcast. The confrontation followed a chaotic 1987 pre-season friendly against Chesterfield. Gibson was one of only two senior players in the side. The sell-out crowd, combined with traffic delays, left no time for a warm-up, and by half-time, they were 4-0 down. Remarkably, they clawed their way back to a 5-4 victory, but Sir Alex wasn’t impressed. “Fergie calls us in the next day and just tore into us about a lack of pride in wearing the shirt in the first half,” Gibson said. As one of the senior players in the team, albeit still in his early 20s, he decided to speak up. It didn’t go well. “I told him to f*** himself and to shove a football up his a***. The frustration really got on top of me. I stormed out, and everyone at the training ground heard it.” Gibson’s departure was swift.
