Major supermarket chains Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, and Aldi saw significant sales growth during the 2024 Christmas period, while Asda and Co-op experienced declines. Online grocery spending reached a record high.
Tesco , Sainsbury's, Lidl and Aldi emerged victorious in Britain's 2024 Christmas supermarket war, all reporting significant sales growth, according to analysts. Tesco saw a 5.0 percent increase in sales over the 12 weeks leading up to December 29th. Its market share jumped to 28.5 percent, the highest since January 2016, driven by strong performance across its convenience, superstore, and online channels.
Sainsbury's achieved its highest market share since December 2019 at 16 percent thanks to 3.5 percent sales growth, exceeding the average rise for supermarkets. Discounters Lidl and Aldi continued their upward trajectory, reaching their highest ever Christmas market shares at 7.3 percent and 10 percent respectively. Lidl experienced the fastest footfall growth among all retailers, with spending surging by 6.6 percent, while Aldi's sales grew by 2.9 percent, attracting an additional 315,000 customers. However, Asda suffered the biggest losses, dropping to a 12.5 percent share after sales declined by 5.8 percent. Co-op also experienced a sales dip of 0.2 percent, settling at a 5.3 percent share. Morrisons bucked the trend with a 0.4 percent sales increase, maintaining its market share at 8.6 percent. Waitrose's share remained stable at 4.6 percent, with spending rising by 2.1 percent. Meanwhile, food and drink spending at Marks & Spencer saw an encouraging 8.7 percent increase. Kantar data revealed that online grocery spending reached a record £1.6 billion for the month, propelling Ocado's sales by 9.6 percent over the 12 weeks, ultimately giving them an 1.8 percent market share
