It must be a wake-up call for a calmer, more compassionate discussion about the best way forward
The Cass Review of gender identity services, published by Dr Hilary Cass will reignite many of the arguments and debates that have surrounded trans healthcare in recent years , and include trans patients, in a book that is, predominantly, about women’s health. The simple answer is because the trans community is part of the same fight for a better, more equitable healthcare system.
I’m not an expert in gender-identity medicine and, though I have some personal reservations about Cass’s recommendations, I’m not the right person to comment on them. But the report does highlight one important point: that the “exceptionally toxic” discourse surrounding trans healthcare is doing real harm to the real patients stuck in the middle of it. And, right now, those trans young people have very real anxieties about what the future might hold.
There are, as I said, many parallels with the treatment I’ve heard cis women describe – as well as issues unique and specific to the trans community. But I was particularly struck by the words of one trans-masculine patient, who pointed out that what trans people really need is, in fact, the same thing we all want and need from our healthcare: respect for our autonomy, and personalised care that recognises our needs as an individual.
