Just south of Lake Garda, Villa Sigurtà has hosted royals and aristocrats but (provided you can fill it) won’t break the bank for a big group holiday
Napoleon III had already had quite a year by the time he reached Valeggio sul Mincio, seven miles south of Lake Garda. After an assassination attempt by Italian revolutionaries, he’d commanded 170,000 troops across the Alps. He’d driven Austria’s Franz Joseph I from Lombardy in a series of bloody battles. So when, in July 1859, he reached his rival’s former headquarters, an elegant Palladian villa at Valeggio’s edge, he decided quite reasonably he’d had enough.
“Hmm. There’s a crack there. I need to get that fixed.” I’d come for culture and found myself instead hearing the everyday worries of a home-owner. I’m in the Emperor Suite where Franz Joseph and Napoleon stayed. It’s as grand as you’d hope: frescoes and antiques in the sitting room; monogrammed pillowcases on a vast canopied bed; a cerulean bathtub mounted within mosaics of curious sea creatures. Five rooms are in the main house. New, modern rooms are in former outbuildings in the garden.
