Twenty-five years after Harold Shipman's crimes were exposed, residents of Hyde, Greater Manchester, where he practiced as a family doctor, share their memories and the lasting impact his actions have had on their community.
Twenty-five years after Harold Shipman became the UK's most prolific serial killer , residents of the town where he worked are still grappling with the legacy of his crimes. Found guilty of murdering 15 patients under his care, it is estimated that the family doctor may have killed up to 260 people in Hyde , Greater Manchester , between the 1970s and the late 1990s. Many of his victims were elderly women who died after he injected them with lethal doses of diamorphine.
Patricia Powell, a resident, believes she saved her mother's life by refusing to leave her alone with Shipman in 1998, just a few months before his arrest. She said her mother, Margaret Beckwith, who was then 64, had an appointment with Shipman at his practice, The Surgery on Market Street. Shipman had intended to give Margaret medication and asked Ms Powell to leave the room for examination, but she refused, sensing 'something not right' about him. 'My mum asked me why and I said 'can't you see he's no good? He fobs people off by telling different stories', Ms Powell, now 62, recalled. She told Shipman, who was convicted in 2000, 'I'm sorry. I'm not leaving' and he eventually wrote a prescription before the pair left unharmed.Ms Powell believes her mother lived longer because of her intervention and is grateful for the extra years they had together. Louise Aliceto described Shipman as a 'horrible, evil man' and said she left his surgery feeling uneasy after a brief visit for a rash. She later learned she had known some of his victims. Ian Whyatt, who was Shipman's patient as a child, described him as an 'arrogant' doctor who looked down on his patients. He said Shipman disliked it when patients thought they knew what was wrong with them and looked at them as though they shouldn't be there. Whyatt added that Shipman's crimes have left people terrified of going to the doctors, with some even too scared to have a flu injection. Alan Braddock, another patient, said he 'wasn't surprised' when Shipman's crimes were exposed. He recalled Shipman's curt instructions when giving him a prescription: 'Don't waste my time. Get it into a chemist.' He added: 'He had an aura and there was something about him that just didn't click.
