They all played their part in propelling the band to stardom - but didn't live to see them reunite

Stop all the clocks, the unthinkable has happened: "The guns have fallen silent and the stars have aligned". Oasis are back, and it’s all anybody in Manchester is going to be talking about until next summer - and beyond.

But it’s those smaller, more underground venues which, for one reason or another, didn’t survive past the 2000s – with the exception of Club 57 in Oldham, still standing today as Whittles, by all accounts a busy and popular live music venue. “Let’s protect the live music spaces we have in the UK, ensuring that both fans and the next generation of superstars have the same opportunities Oasis had.”

With the building dating back to 1876, the club it housed would form part of Mancunian music history in more ways than one. Legendary Manchester club night Funkademia was started at the Boardwalk by DJ David Payne in 1995 and has gone on to be the city’s longest running club night, moving to the Mint Lounge and recently to the Deaf Institute off Oxford Road.

It wasn’t quite the end of the story for Venue, however, as a new club under the same banner opened on Jackson’s Row in 2007. Covering the opening in the Manchester Evening News at the time, CityLife wrote: “Located on Whitworth Street just down the lane from the old Hacienda, the Venue acted as a counterpoint to Factory Records' much higher concept creation.

“Remember the sticky floor? The occasionally overflowing plumbing? The DJ set that was so similar each week, it was more like a mix-tape? The cheap, cheap drinks? It might have been a hole, but it was OUR hole.” Sadly, the good times at the Hacienda weren’t to last. It saw the UK’s first ever ecstasy-related death in 1989 and its latter years were marred by a spate of shootings. The club’s finances were also troubled: because many patrons used drugs rather than drink, it didn’t make enough money from alcohol sales and was hampered by debts.

Middleton Hippodrome More affectionately known as Hippos, this venue hosted Oasis at what was only their third performance ever on April 20, 1992. They supported Peter Hook’s band Revenge on the night; tickets cost just £4. The club opened in 1988 but, according to former promoter Colin Boulter, didn’t really get going until his and DJ Jay Wearden’s company Clash began putting nights on there in April 1991.
