Amazon Prime's new documentary, 'Harald and Sonja', chronicles the enduring love story of the Norwegian royal couple, highlighting their nine-year struggle against societal and familial pressures. From a 'love at first sight' encounter to facing disapproval from the Palace, their journey showcases a powerful and forbidden romance.
The romance of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway will be the subject of a new Amazon Prime drama depicting their nine-year battle for love. Though it was 'love at first sight' for the pair, Harald's father, King Olav, insisted he marry a woman of royal birth. Sonja, the daughter of a merchant, was deemed unsuitable by the palace. This led to a nine-year struggle, culminating in their 1968 marriage.
The series will chronicle their 60-year relationship, portraying a 'true story of love so powerful it threatened the Norwegian monarchy'.Amazon Prime Norway has released a trailer for the documentary 'Harald and Sonja' ahead of its February 14th premiere. Romantic scenes depict the couple sailing, while Sonja, played by Gina Bernhoft Gørvell, is warned not to fall for Harald (Sindre Strand Offerdal) as he must marry a princess. The program was originally slated for Viaplay but moved to Prime Video due to financial issues.Producers, when the initial production began in 2023 under Viaplay, described the story as 'like something out of a fairy tale'. They believed it had 'all the ingredients to become a major international viewer favourite for anyone who likes unique and genuine love stories'. The story of Harald and Sonja began in 1959 when the Crown Prince, having recently completed his army training, met Sonja Haraldsen at a dinner party hosted by his friend Johan Stenerse. The couple, both 87 now, agree it was 'love at first sight'. Harald was a cadet at the Norwegian Military Academy, and Sonja was studying English, French, and Art History at the University of Oslo. Despite her education and her father's success as a clothing merchant, Sonja was considered unsuitable by the Palace. King Olav, fearing history would repeat itself with his son renouncing his birthright like Edward VIII, demanded Harald marry a woman of 'blue blood'. The series will highlight the emotional challenges they faced on their path to love. The King even invited Sonja to the Palace for a meal on one of Harald's birthdays, unaware of their relationship. Only after learning of their romance did he reportedly order Harald to sever ties with the 'girl of the people'.
