By abandoning the plans to torch thousands of regulations, Mr Sunak has angered the Brexit wing of his party
Another parliamentary battle, another capitulation forThe PM has now recorded a fifth climbdown in almost as many months, this time in the face of mounting opposition to his plans to revoke thousands of EU laws by the end of the year.
The grand Brexiter plan had been to scrap more than 4,000 laws and regulations carried over from the UK’s time as a member of the EU in a great “bonfire” of Brussels red tape. But as Mr Sunak has found in abundance, taking back control of sovereignty often means Parliament doing things that the Government did not count on.
The plans to potentially scrap regulations protecting our rivers and wildlife, or our rights as workers, at the whim of individual ministers and without full parliamentary scrutiny was always likely to face a backlash, particularly in the more unruly House of Lords. Yet this did not stop the Government from ploughing on with the plans – even when anyone close to the proceedings could see they were doomed to failure.
