Scots voted overwhelmingly to put Starmer into Downing Street - the usual blame game won't work
Earlier this week, Finance Secretary Shona Robison outlined £500m worth of cuts to public spending outlined £500m worth of cuts to public spending. The main reason for this was, she said, “prolonged Westminster austerity, first under the Tories and now under Keir Starmer’s Labour”.
It’s a different story with Labour, though. Scots voted overwhelmingly to put Starmer into Downing Street, providing him with 37 Scottish MPs, up from just one at the previous election. The SNP was humiliated, cut from 39 down to nine. Following the disastrous general election result, the departure of Nicola Sturgeon, the quick downfall of her successor Humza Yousaf, and an ongoing police investigation into party finances, this was an opportunity to show the SNP was under fresh and dynamic new leadership. Swinney had talked about taking the SNP back towards the “moderate mainstream”, which should have been made easier by the collapse of the coalition with the far-left Scottish Greens.
