The small Lancashire hamlet with its own marina that is the county's rising star

When you say Tewitfield to another person, their responsible could well be 'how is that spelt, C-H-E-W, like the sweet?" That reply is indicative of two things - that they clearly haven't heard of the hamlet just outside of Carnforth, and that they are keen to learn more about it.

Tourists can sit out on the sun-drenched balcony, beloved pet dog at their feet, with a morning coffee or evening glass of fizz and wonder at the light sparkling on the water, admiring the rural landscape beyond. One side of the marina opens up to the mouth of the canal and the locks, surrounded by countryside infused by autumn hues and pleasant, textured undulating hills.

The towpaths take you along Lancaster Canal where you can drink in your surroundings, saying hello to the fishermen as you pass by or giving the canal boat skipper an enthusiastic wave as they float by. Head to Farleton Fell and Hutton Knott or pause to learn a snippet of history about the canal on the information boards dotted along the footpaths.

The marina is the shooting star of the area, but it is surrounded by a galaxy of tiny villages straight out of a British period TV drama. You can just imagine a frosty, snow-covered version of Priest Hutton village adorning Christmas cards. Picture-perfect stuff.
