Pruning tomato plants is key to improving fruit yield, quality and health - and there's one vital job gardeners need to carry out to achieve this, according to experts
The plants naturally develop into bushy, multi-stemmed plants that can collapse under the weight of their own fruit if not managed.
"Proper pruning channels the plant's energy into fruit production, resulting in higher yields of larger, tastier and healthier tomatoes," Reese explained. These suckers, small shoots that grow in the junction between the main stem and branches, can "weaken the plant" by siphoning off energy that could be used for fruiting towards vegetative growth instead.
The next step is to regularly inspect the plant for any branches or leaves that appear diseased, damaged, or overcrowded - prune these to promote better air circulation and reduce the risk of fungal infections.
