The underpass links York Street Train Station to the Sailortown area and Belfast city centre

Taking place later this week, on August 9 and 10, a Street Art Jam will take place at the York Street/Whitla Street underpass in North Belfast . This is the first collaboration between Translink , Seedhead Arts, and Arts & Business NI, aimed at revitalising this key urban space.

In April, the Infrastructure Minister detailed plans for the pedestrian underpass, which included increased lighting, more signage at the Nelson Street entrance to improve wayfinding for pedestrians and cyclists, and the installation of artwork. DfI Roads and Translink have worked together in close partnership to enhance an area vital to both York Street Station users and the broader community. Their collaboration has been key in transforming and maintaining this shared space, demonstrating the positive impact of strategic cooperation on creating a more connected environment for everyone.

"The street art will enhance the space and foster a sense of pride and connectedness, ensuring it remains a lasting, positive fixture in the community while naturally deterring vandalism.’’ Mary Nagele, CEO of Arts & Business NI, added: "We're thrilled to co-fund this project, which highlights art's ability to transform spaces and unite communities. By blending graffiti culture with poetry, this mural will create a striking wayfinding experience, linking both sides of the underpass and supporting community renewal."
