The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging mixed-aged couples still claiming tax credits to switch to Universal Credit before the April 5 deadline. Migration Notice letters provide guidance and a chance to secure transitional protection, ensuring continued financial support during the transition. The article outlines specific rules for mixed-aged couples, including eligibility criteria, transitional protection provisions, and how Housing Benefit will be affected. It also highlights potential benefits for couples claiming Universal Credit, depending on their circumstances.

Some couples could soon lose their government payments if they don't take action. The Department for Work and Pensions is sending out letters alerting those still claiming tax credits that they must soon move to Universal Credit. These Migration Notice letters are being delivered as the April 5 deadline for the end of tax credits rapidly approaches.

However, mixed aged couples still claiming tax credits can still make a claim regardless of the value of their savings as long as they apply before the deadline set out for them. Transitional protection helps to bridge the gap in payments if a claimant's initial entitlement for Universal Credit is less than their current tax credits claim.

In the latter case, Housing Benefit will end two weeks after the deadline date set out in the Migration Notice. But a reclaim could be made if, as a couple, you claim Universal Credit or if you do not claim Universal Credit and are otherwise not entitled to it.
