Customers of British Gas , OVO, EDF , EON and Octopus are being urged to combat "vampire power" - the electricity consumed by devices and appliances even when they're not in use. Following the festive period, households are advised to switch off items such as TVs, computers, printers, coffee makers, and even electric toothbrushes.

"No extension cords whatsoever," he cautioned. If you're uncertain about which devices and appliances should not be plugged into extension cords, experts suggest avoiding air fryers, microwaves, toasters, fridges, space heaters and electric heaters.
