American graphite producers are pushing for steep tariffs on Chinese graphite imports, alleging unfair trade practices and market distortion.
American graphite producers have petitioned the US government to impose tariffs as high as 920% on imports of natural and synthetic graphite from China. The American Active Anode Material Producers (AAAMP), a coalition of North American graphite producers, submitted a petition to the US Department of Commerce and International Trade Commission to spur a trade investigation and impose tariffs on Chinese imports.
According to the petition, the Chinese industry is dumping active anode material in the US - distorting the market – and preventing the establishment of a domestic industry. Additionally, it said that the Chinese industry is receiving unfair subsidies, further putting domestic manufacturers at a disadvantage. 'AAAMP is filing this case to help protect the North American graphite industry, which is at risk of being smothered by China's malicious trade practices,' AAAMP spokesperson Erik Olson said. 'There is overwhelming evidence that China dumps artificially cheap graphite into global markets, which is made possible by state-sponsored policies and massive subsidies.' Olson warned that without US government intervention, the country's graphite industry is 'in peril'. 'China's anticompetitive actions make it challenging for graphite producers to find secure financial footing, which prevents them from becoming established players in the global market,' he said. 'The Chinese industry's use of unfair pricing is harming American companies and workers,' Daniel Pickard, lead counsel for AAAMP, added. 'The domestic industry is committed to opposing these unfair trade practices and ensuring that American manufacturing is able to compete on a level playing field.' The petition's sponsors include Northern Graphite, Nouveau Monde Graphite, and synthetic graphite manufacturer Anovion. Several Australian graphite producers, including Novonix and Syrah Resources, have also joined the petition. Currently, the US has tariffs of around 25% on Chinese graphite imports
