The South African police have often been accused of being violent and brutal. This reputation dates back to apartheid, when officers were used to enforce discrimination and segregation.
On average, someone was killed every 20 hours ‘as a result of police action’ in the year 2019 to 2020, according to Ipid statistics. Some 34 were killed and 78 were left seriously injured after protests for increased wages ended in what is now known as the Marikana massacre.
