'There were so many people we couldn't get them all on one picture'
Hundreds of villagers flocked to their local post office in a show of support after the owners received homophobic hate mail.
In a bid to outweigh the negative with positive, hundreds of New Longton residents donned in bright colours and rainbow flags gathered outside the post office. Over 200 locals braved the rain and windy conditions on Tuesday June 28 where they stood together for a picture that "spoke volumes".The event co-organised by one local, Sarah, who also runs the New Longton & Whitestake community Facebook page, was expected to attract some attention from those closer by to the post office.
"People even came from Bolton. It was only about 20 minutes but people gathered in the cricket club afterwards so it was really nice because you could see people forming new friendships out of it." "People hoped that whoever had taken the time to write such nasty words, either drove past and saw the outpouring of support or was aware by seeing it on social media and hopefully understood that their views were very unwelcome," Sarah. As well as being a time to show support for the LGBTQ+ community, Sarah says the event also opened up doors for new friendships and helped bring the community together in more ways than one.
