The government warns that 'anyone can suffer from a heat-related problem' as temperatures rise on the islands
Health authorities in the Canary Islands have issued ‘high risk’ alerts for the holiday destination as temperatures soar this week. A red alert, indicating a ‘high risk’ to health, is in place for Santa Lucía de Tirajana and San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria until August 22.
An orange ‘medium risk’ alert has been issued for Mogán in Gran Canaria while a yellow ‘low risk’ alert is in place for Tejeda on the island. A yellow warning has also been issued for Candelaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife until August 21. The alerts, issued by the General Directorate of Public Health for the Canary Islands, were triggered when forecasts published by Spain’s national weather agency Aemet 'exceeded the threshold for risk warnings’. According to Aemet, a yellow weather warning for high temperatures covers southern Gran Canaria for the next three days.Forecasters warned that “temperatures are expected to exceed 36 degrees…in the south of Gran Canaria” on Tuesday.
The Canary Islands’ General Directorate of Public Health said that vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women and children need to take particular care in the heat as they are most at risk. It recommends that these groups stay in cool and shaded places, cool off when needed, reduce physical activity, and avoid playing sports in the middle of the day.
They advise people to avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol or excessive sugar and to drink water and liquids frequently, even if you’re not thirsty. It warns that although certain groups are especially vulnerable, “anyone can suffer from a heat-related problem”.
